Toyota 86 Hakone Edition Pays Homage To Japan’s Most Famous Highway

2020 Toyota 86 Hakone Edition

Two hours southwest of Tokyo lies a stretch of highway that’s one of the great driving roads in the world, the Hakone Turnpike. In honor of the iconic snaking road, which tops many bucket lists, Toyota is introducing a special “Hakone Edition” of the 86.

The Toyota 86 Hakone Edition features a Hakone green paint job, 17″ twisted spoke bronze wheels and a black spoiler. Inside, the seats are wrapped in tan leather with black Alcantara inserts, along with tan and black stitching throughout the cabin. There’s also an embroidered “Toyota 86” logo on the passenger-side dashboard, along with an embossed “86” trunk carpet.

I’m not gonna lie, the color combo is pretty sick, and the black accents look great against the green paint. In addition, everyone that purchases an 86 Hakone Edition will receive a pair of tan key gloves and a folio cover with a debossed 86 logo and black stitching. Fancy.

Sadly, the Toyota 86 Hakone Edition is all show and no extra go, based off of the regular 2020 86 GT, which is powered by a 2.0-liter boxer four-cylinder engine that puts out 205HP and 156 lb-ft of torque, with your choice of six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

It’s kind of a bummer Toyota didn’t even try to add a little extra power, be it from an intake, free flowing exhaust, or something to make it a little more appealing to buyers, especially given the whole “racing theme” behind the Hakone Edition.

Because this edition amounts to little more than an appearance package, it shouldn’t cost too much more than the 86’s base GT trim level, which starts at $29,565. Production starts later this fall, with only a limited number of cars coming to the US. If you want one, you should probably contact your dealer sooner than later.
